MAN'S
HARVEST
by John Maidwell
- with apologies to 'We plough the fields and scatter'
We
spray the fields and scatter - the poison on the land
Which once was fed and watered - by God's almighty hand
The bugs resist our chemicals - and multiply again
The lakes are full of dying fish - destroyed by acid rain.
Man
only is the maker - of everything that mars
He kills the wayside flowers - with fumes of passing cars
Pours sulphur out of chimneys - until the trees are dead
And fills the ground beneath us - with nuclear ate instead.
When
this world as created - God saw that it was good
And we depend upon it - for life and health and food
Unless we show compassion - to creatures great and small
And work hard to preserve them - there'll be no life at all.
