Our
congregation at Orpington Baptist Church tends to reflect
the mix of people within the immediate area of Orpington, which
means it covers a good range of ethnic, cultural, religious
and social backgrounds with an age band from 0 to 90+. This
provides a great variety of relationships and interactions
that form a part of the attraction of OBC. Services are
varied, taking in both the traditional approach to worship
and more contemporary forms including modern songs, a wide
range of musical instruments, drama and discussion. Many
people get involved in the services in addition to the Ministry
team and this proves very beneficial as it introduces new
ideas and different perspectives as well as giving opportunities
for releasing previously hidden talents.
While
we have a full programme of activities that aim to develop
the Christian life of those attending OBC, we also reach out
to those who are seeking to know more about Christianity through
various courses/events; for example the Y-Course, First Steps
or Alpha. In addition, there are a number of activities
that stretch into the local community, including work in schools,
a Blind Club and a professionally run Pre-School.
Our
mission links cover a wide geographic area with specific connections
in Tanzania, Russia, Kosovo and we are actively involved in
Tear Fund, which, inter alia, promotes fairer trade for the
poor nations of our world.
As
a Baptist church, we have traditions and certain ways of doing
things but hope we have something to offer everyone who wants
to join us whatever your background. Our communion is open
to all who have a personal relationship with Christ as the
Son of God. We are active members of Evangelical Alliance
and Churches Together in Orpington, which gives us great opportunity
to share ideas and experience with others. We regularly
have speakers from other churches, hold joint services and
a number of our members, as well as the Ministers, are invited
to preach at other locations.
Our church buildings are a mixture of 1967 design, as seen from the Tower
Road side and a later brick sanctuary added in 1977, which forms the main
entrance from The Drive. (So having an address of "Station Road" from
where there is no access is a bit bizarre!) We do have a small car park
for use when attending events in the church but most people have to park in
local roads (watch out for parking restrictions and please respect residents’ access
to their drives). Our sanctuary is wheelchair accessible. We welcome people
with disabilities, and are working towards meeting the accreditation standards
set by Churches for All.
There has been a Baptist Church in
Orpington for
154 years, although the present site has only been
occupied since 1967. Originally the church met in a building
referred to as Bethesda Chapel and then later, in a new building
at the Carlton Parade end of the High Street. |
